Start with three nights in Cape Town, a city that’s got it all – striking mountains, golden beaches and a buzzing food and culture scene. Ride the cable car up Table Mountain for views that stretch for miles, wander through the colourful streets of Bo-Kaap, and meet the famous penguins at Boulders Beach. Foodies will love the Oranjezicht market at Granger Bay, where you can graze your way through stalls of local produce, and nearby Constantia offers a tempting wine-tasting experience – on two wheels, no less – in South Africa’s oldest wine region.
From here, the legendary Garden Route awaits. Your first scenic drive hugs the coast to Hermanus – one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Join a marine safari to seek out the full Marine Big Five: whales, dolphins, seals, penguins and sharks.
Continue east along this lush, impossibly beautiful stretch of coastline to Knysna, nestled between ancient forests and a sparkling lagoon. This charming town is a feast for the senses – think salty sea breezes, freshly shucked oysters, buzzing markets and sunset views from the waterfront. Take a stroll along forested trails, dip into tucked-away rock pools and unwind in cafés and craft shops that seem made for slow travel days.
And just when you think the journey couldn’t get any better, it’s time to head inland to the untamed Eastern Cape for the safari of a lifetime. You’ll spend three nights at Kariega Game Reserve, a 11,500-hectare wilderness that’s home to the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – along with zebra, hippo, giraffe, kudu, wildebeest and plenty more. Join expert rangers on morning and evening game drives as the bush comes to life with sound and movement.
